Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, usually referred to as Rutgers University or Rutgers, is a leading national public research university and also the largest institution for higher education in New Jersey. Actually, Rutgers was originally founded as a private university. Later, it evolved into a coeducational public research university. This makes Rutgers one of only two colonial colleges that later became public universities.

With a enrollment of more than 58,000 students (including undergraduates and graduates), Rutgers University offers more than 100 distinct bachelor, 100 master and 80 doctoral and professional degree programs across 175 academic departments, 28 degree-granting schools and colleges and 3 campuses (respectively located in New Brunswick, Newark and Camden). In addition to three brick-of-mortar campuses, Rutgers also has a virtual campus – RutgersOnline.

What about RutgersOnline?

RutgersOnline extends the services and education of the university, offering students the opportunity to telecommute to campus anytime and anywhere. As a RutgersOnline student, you will benefit from some of Rutgers’ most celebrated faculty members through online courses that are equivalent to campus-based courses. Each semester, there are many different courses available online.

Currently, there are hundreds of credit courses and several complete degree programs offered through this virtual campus. Additionally, many fully online non-credit certificate programs are also available through RutgersOnline for professional development. Be noted that now it is impossible to earn an undergraduate degree fully online through RutgersOnline.

Credit online degree programs are offered through:

College of Nursing
Graduate School of Education
Mason Gross School of the Arts
Rutgers Business School Newark and New Brunswick
School of Communication and Information
School of Management and Labor Relations
School of Social Work

Non-credit, online certificate programs are offered through:

Bloustein Online Continuing Education Program
Center for Applied Psychology Answer Program
Center for Continuing Professional Development
Department of Urban Education
Institute for Management and Executive Development
School of Communication and Information
School of Social Work

Note: For the most current listing of courses, check the Online Schedule of Classes (available on acs.rutgers.edu/soc).

How do RutgersOnline courses work?

Almost all of the RutgersOnline courses are designed as asynchronous learning experiences. This means you can attend classes at any time. In addition, these online classes are highly interactive, as Rutgers limits class size to ensure that there is a great deal of interaction among students and instructors.

All in all, RutgersOnline classes are equivalent to regular in-class undergraduate and graduate level courses, except that students won’t have to attend classes at a set time in a set place. However, as the asynchronous environment offers threaded discussion, class conversations will unfold over a period of time. As a result, you need to participate in classes at least three times a week for a fall or spring class and five times a week for a summer class (as summer is a compressed semester).

Note: Sometimes, RutgersOnline may run a synchronous session via chat or webcasting, but this information will be listed in the course description.

How to Apply an Online Program with Rutgers?

Consider enrolling into a Rutgers online program? Actually, the admissions and graduation requirements for online programs are the same as on-campus programs. Be aware that if you would like to take more than 3 courses per term, you should apply to the on-campus program.

If you are admitted to an online program of Rutgers, be ready to come to campus for two days to take part in an orientation and plot a course of study. The orientation usually occurs during the month before you start your program (in August for students starting in fall and in January for spring).

To avoid confusion, you need to indicate your primary interest as either campus-based program or online program. If you are undecided about which option to choose, call 732-932-7169 for help or send emails to online@comminfo.rutgers.edu.
