As we all know, many colleges and universities offer 100% online programs for students. This means students can take their online classes through the internet completely, without having to go to school. Unlike these colleges / universities, Syracuse University has residency requirements for its online students.
Well, what does this mean? – This means all students enrolled in a Syracuse University online program are required to remain in residency for a period of time.
The requirement for residency gives distance students an opportunity to experience college life, especially those who live outside the Syracuse area or are too busy to attend campus-based courses. More importantly, it provides students with a basic connection to the school that will help them excel in their program.
Now, let’s have a look at the iSchool’s residency requirements…
“Founded in 1933, the iSchool at Syracuse University has been offering high quality graduate level online learning opportunities to students from all over the world. Each year, students representing a wide range of professional, cultural and academic experiences and geographic locations take part in iSchool distance education programs. With limited residencies and asynchronous course delivery, students can learn virtually anytime and anywhere.”
All students enrolled in a non-executive online master’s program begin their first year of study with a week-long required residency at the Syracuse University campus in July. Though optional elective courses may have additional residency requirements, MSLIS (Master of Science in Library and Information Science) students may choose to complete all remaining degree requirements online.
During the residency, students will:
• Be oriented to the course technology that will allow them to complete the rest of their program online
• Complete core program activities that are hard to duplicate online (such as hands-on labs, conference-style poster presentation session)
• Finish the introductory course required for their degree
• Meet other distance and campus-based students
• Get to know iSchool faculty and staff members
• Complete the first 4 credits of their program
• Attend an advising session
• Familiarize themselves with the iSchool Learning Management System (ILMS), the courseware tool used for most online courses
As for iSchool’s LMS, this is an instructional resource tool used in the online environment, which is designed to:
• Deliver online learning courses
• Offer an integrated environment for faculty and student communications outside of class using e-mail, course-specific bulletin boards and synchronous chat sessions
• Offer an integrated environment for the distribution of course materials like the syllabus, supplemental readings, self-paced examinations and skills exercise and the online posting of shared student assignments
• Distribute student grades and grade statistics privately
• Provide private discussion forums for group-based assignments and exercise
Note: All residency requirements for programs and for individual courses are mandatory. The majority of residency sessions takes place from 9am to 5pm on the scheduled dates. For specific requirements, check the course you are enrolled in.
Anyway, you should consider your schedule before registering for a course with a required residency. If you are unable to handle the requirement, the online program must be dropped.
You should expect that online courses with residency requirements will begin either with the start of the required residency or with the start of the semester – whichever comes first. Information about pre-residency assignments will be posted in advance within the online learning section of the iSchool Learning Management System (iLMS). Assignments may include:
• Written work
• Participation on iLMS before the residency
And where do these online students live on earth? During the summer semester, accommodations are available in Syracuse University residence halls. You can choose to stay in a single or double room furnished with a microwave and a refrigerator. Summer housing on campus costs about $100 to $150 per week.
However, during the fall and spring semesters, housing may be available at hotels located within walking distance of the university. The housing would cost around $130 per night. Compared to campus housing, this is a much bigger expense.
Anyhow, in addition to housing fees, you should also consider the cost of textbooks, computers, internet and travel expenses.
For those commuting for residency courses by car, there are various parking options available to them. For instance, they may park in the University Sheraton Hotel parking lot (801 University Avenue Syracuse, New York 13210). Remember to ask for student rate if parking there.
Students also have the option to purchase parking passes from SU Parking Services. For more information about SU Parking Services, check the following page:
